Still Life on White

Every object has a story to tell.

The story goes that a little boy handed in a blank, white sheet of paper for his art assignment. “What’s this?” asked the teacher. “I call it ‘Cow Eating Grass,’ answered the boy. “Oh?” queried the teacher, “Where’s the grass?” “The cow ate it all.” “Hmm…, and the cow?” the teacher skeptically asked. The young artist looked up at his teacher and explained the obvious, “It left once all the grass was gone,” seeing more in the white than the teacher could.

物が語る

聞いた話によると、少年は美術の授業の宿題として先生に白紙を渡しました。「これは?」との先生の質問にその男の子は「僕は『草を食べる牛』と呼んでるんだ」首をかしげた先生が「へぇー。で、草は?」と聞くと「牛が全部食べたよ」と当たり前のように回答が。「なるほど。じゃ牛は?」と先生がなおも追求すると、呆れた幼いアーティストは「草がなくなったからどっか行っちゃった」と先生が見えない白のストーリを説明したそうな。
